RENÉ STANGER
René Stanger
*René Stanger (1985 in Reutlingen) lives and works in Karlsruhe. His artistic practice focuses on painting and drawing, while occasionally extending into collage, video, sound and installation.
His paintings often begin with existing images: film stills, screen views, photographic fragments and found visual material. In bodies of work such as Screen Studies, Mirror Life, Body Studies and Contact Zones, these sources are not reproduced, but transformed through cropping, layering, displacement and painterly reconstruction into new pictorial spaces. Bodies appear fragmented, obscured or suspended between figuration and abstraction.
At the centre of his work is the question of how images structure perception, memory and bodily presence. References to film, digital image culture and art history encounter the materiality of painting. In more recent works, the visual language becomes increasingly reduced: individual forms, gestures and spatial relationships take the place of closed scenes.
Stanger studied Fine Arts at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe with John Bock and Ernst Caramelle. Alongside his own artistic practice, he has been involved with the Karlsruhe-based platform größerNull since 2014, which organises exhibitions and art projects.
